WHAT: The Association for Behavioral Healthcare (ABH), a statewide nonprofit organization representing over 80 community-based behavioral healthcare providers, is hosting a legislative briefing on its bill to strengthen over 400 mental health centers across the state that provide critical behavioral health treatment. The bill would require higher MassHealth reimbursement rates for these centers to help them confront a historic workforce shortage, thereby reducing wait times for people in need of services.
Mental health centers are licensed by the Department of Public Health and provide MassHealth members with essential outpatient behavioral health services. For every 10 clinicians hired by these centers, 13 leave for private practice or settings that pay higher salaries. The bill, co-sponsored by Senator John F. Keenan and Representative James J. O’Day, would allow centers to pay adequate salaries to recruit and retain clinicians, reduce waitlists, and ensure a quality workforce.
